Shared Transfer
If you are looking to save a little money, the shared transfer service to Isla Mujeres offered by ADO and the transfer company Playa Express may be the one you are looking for. The cost of the transfer is between 45.00 MXN to 75.00 MXN per person.
But before explaining the logistics to get to Isla Mujeres, with this type of transfer service, first let’s know some of its disadvantages.
- It is not private: This service is shared with other people.
- It is not comfortable: This service has very small “seats”, therefore you would not have a comfortable ride.
- They make constant stops: This service is a “colectivo”, therefore, it may make stops during the trip.
- It arrives at the ADO terminal: This type of transfer has the ADO terminal as a point of its route and not the maritime terminal of Isla Mujeres.
- It is not very safe: Not all units go through a period of cleaning and sanitization.
Logistics to get to Isla Mujeres
If you choose the ADO service as your first transfer option, you have to look for the ADO module at the Cancun airport, buy your ticket and wait for the bus to depart to downtown Cancun. The waiting time can be from 30 minutes to one hour maximum.
As such, the bus will drop you off at the ADO terminal, and from here you have to look for Tulum Avenue, which is a main avenue and take a cab to the Puerto Juarez terminal, which will cost from 100.00 MXN to 150.00 MXN.
Or, take a public transportation bus to José López Portillo Avenue. From here, you will have to take another bus to Puerto Juarez and get to the maritime terminal.
If you choose Playa express vans as your transfer service, your first task will be to get out of Cancun airport to the federal highway. If you do it walking, it can take you 20 to 30 minutes to get there.
From the federal highway you have to wait for the Playa Express vans to pass by and make the stop. It should be noted that if the vans are “at capacity”, they will not stop and you will have to wait for another unit.
Once inside the unit, you will have to wait for it to arrive at the ADO terminal, from where you will have to take a cab to the Puerto Juárez terminal or follow the previous process: take a public transportation bus to José López Portillo Avenue. From here, you will have to take another bus to Puerto Juarez and arrive at the maritime terminal.
Public Transportation
As a last transfer option to Isla Mujeres from Cancun Airport, we have the option of public transportation. But as such, it is not very recommendable for the following reasons:
- The units are very noisy
- No air conditioning
- No Wifi
- The seats are not comfortable, safe or clean.
- The transfer is shared with more than 50 people
- No space for luggage
Public transportation logistics
Once you arrive at the Cancun airport, you have to leave the airport towards the Cancun – Chetumal federal highway. It should be noted that there is no transfer from the airport to the highway, so you will have to walk and it can take up to 30 minutes.
Once on the federal highway, you have to take a public transportation to downtown Cancun; from there you have to take another transportation to Lopez Portillo Avenue and finally another transportation to Puerto Juarez.
In short, this method involves 3 different public transportation buses. And as we mentioned, it is not very safe and comfortable if you are traveling with a lot of luggage.
Conclusion
The best way to get to Isla Mujeres from Cancun is by private transfer, as it is the safest, cleanest, and most comfortable, and of course, it avoids going through a long process of transportation logistics.
